Just been completely twittered out over the US election.
As every twitwit (much better than twitophile) has proved this is the only show in the world, and yes it is substantial.
What I have seen is that there is this overwhelming sense that the sun will rise tomorrow and all will be good in the world. People are crying over this, tears of absolute joy.
This is a huge amount of pressure for this guy, he has not only the weight of Americans expectations, but that of the entire world.
The reality is there will still be a financial crisis, the USA will be in recession, there will still be soldiers dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, thousands of people will be out of work, many more will lose their homes. I know this guy didn't do that, he's not responsible, and people are just looking for a happy story, something for the future, some shining light from the dark tunnel.......BUT....
There is always a but, this will be the hardest time to take over, for anyone, everything that could turn to shite has!!! and rest assured that people will soon get over the "honeymoon" period quickly, especially if they are suffering a bit of pain, financial or otherwise.
If Mr Obama is to have a chance to serve more than a single term, he really needs to get it right, and get some quick wins under his belt. It will take every ounce of skill and ability the man has to flip America over, something the majority want both there and abroad.
My best wishes go out to the man.
On a lighter note, if the bar is opened in Barack's old home in Menteng, will it now be called
"The Prez" bar or what about "Commander & Chief" or just plain "Bar One" (like his plane)??
May be the most popular drink will be a Black American. (just swap the Vodka for Bourbon, I'll give that a go).
Cheers

yeah... even the indonesian housewife is excited. :) It's like something out of a movie isn't it. Now, I am all geared up for a 'change I can believe in' in Indonesia. :)
Kat, Why are you excited???
Maybe he will have the same impact as one Maggie T did in the UK!! That was a fist too I believe.
What change in Indonesia???
The look on his face said it all when he walked out to give his speech. I'm sure he was rejoicing inside but at the same time, the weight of his new job must have already been wearing him down.
Why I'm excited? I actually turned the TV on to purposely watch the news yesterday! Obama represented hope... but I won't be all boring and housewife-y now.
Once the Obama mania is over, I'd be nervously watching what happened after the RBA cut down rates and the property market getting shaky. Should we buy now or never....?
What change in Indonesia? Seriously, I haven't found one person I'd give my vote to for President. All these house of reps candidates are coming up with their own blogspots, and to me, all I've seen so far are so old school. Noone has inspired me.Yet. Same old same old. Party platforms are generally 'populis' and rhetorical. I'll let you know once I stumble upon one I like. Or do you know one you think I'll like? I am a bit to the left but years of oz style economics lecturing had made me a hopeless economic realist as well. cheers
Hi Kat,
This Obama hope thing is a hell of a lot of pressure on the guy. I understand that in America the hope is well placed it is their country it is their new President, they have a right to the hope.
I just think the rest of the worlds hope is a little missed placed, especially here in Indonesia. Just because Barry lived here in this youth wont deliver much in the way of advantages for Indonesia.
I'm a realist here, Barack will have his plate full just getting America on track in the first few years let alone straightening out all that is wrong in the world.
I think that America will become quite inwardly focussed and maybe that's what the rest of the world is looking for, the hope America will disappear, "pull their head in a bit".
As for politics here, ummmmm.........Their seems at this stage only two in the running for President if you can trust opinion polls, but thats all we have til the real thing. They are SBY and Megawati. I wasn't here during MS Megawati'e reign so don't real feel qualified to say, but the general feeling is she is not her fathers daughter, and is only famous for her "Big Hair" as nothing much else was achieved. I will stand corrected on this, like I said I wasn't here and my opinion is based on the collective comments of local freinds and colleagues.
I have seen something from SBY, I understand that he seems the master of procastination, but I think this is a product of only having popular support (the People) and little political support (minority party).
That said, almost daily corruption accused are being brought before the courts and being sentenced, some of these are quite high and formerly powerful people. So thats good.
The comments I hear from the same friends and colleagues is than he is an honest man, a far cry from many others in office here. Its a start, maybe not a great start but Indonesia has to maintain hope also.
Just my 2 cents worth, BTW I love realists they can adapt to the situation rather than just stating this is no right it should be something else.
Cheers

I hear you GJ, it is a hell of a job for Obama.
About why Indonesians are soo excited with this is because we are sentimental kind of people, although I'm sure Obama will care less about his childhood period. Buy maybe.. maybe he can give us a little bit of privilege to get American VISA lol
Maybe he likes a challenge. Not everyone is weighed down by responsibility and change. Do you think that inheriting the government after the joke that is George W was ever going to be a walk in the park. But fact is - he has the smarts to do it (look at the total resume of the guy), the youth and the charisma to pull it off. Unfortunately Proposition 8 was passed in the same elections, so it is a little step back as well as a giant leap forward. But fact is - less than 50 years ago in the US southern states a 14 year old african american man was killed for talking to a white woman. I recently spoke to a american who's mother's friends were killed in a church bombing because of their colour. His parents had dogs attack them when they went to vote (they had to join the republican party to be allowed to vote in the first place). He is voting because his parents and grandparents have fought hard to be able to vote. The fact that the majority of America voted for Obama says a lot about the US. He is up for the job. If you read his books, you will probably even realise that he is more than likely looking forward to the challenge. Poor bastard - I don't think so. The rest of the world is excited because there is always going to be one country who holds the power. The US were losing their power. I know who I would prefer between the US, China and Russia. Bring it on.
well, i don't mind him. better than miss palin who doesn't even know that africa is a continent.
Hi Ecky,
It is a hell of a job.
JR, I was just trying to make the point that the expectation on Barack. The extent of the problems in the USA remain exactly the same no matter who won, except that if John Mc had have won the overall expectation would have been much lower. He would have been given more leeway in not achieving success, this will not be extended to Mr Obama making the same job more difficult to handle. Hence the poor bugger comment.
Dear According, Let's not belittle the less educated amongst us now. Remember I'm just a simple monkey man!!!!!!
